Honoring those who led the response to NYC’s HIV/AIDS epidemic

March 18, 2013, (New York, NY) On March 28th please join New York’s “who’s who” at Chelsea Pier’s Pier 60 for Bailey House’s 30^th Anniversary Auction & Gala. This year, Bailey House will honor actor Alan Cumming; Harlan Bratcher, President & CEO of A|X Armani Exchange; Bingham McCutchen LLP; and a cadre of men and women who, together with Bailey House, led NYC’s earliest response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Television anchor and journalist Jane Pauley will host the evening. The gala evening will include a VIP dinner followed by the renowned Bailey House auction conducted by auctioneer George McNeely.

The auction will feature more than 300 items, including artwork by Robert Mapplethorpe, Hunt Slonem, Herb Ritts and Andre Kertesz; a stay at Gaia Hotel and Reserve, a 5 star resort in Costa Rica;  2 VIP Tickets to the opening night of Alan Cumming’s Macbeth on Broadway and the after party; a portrait sitting with Andres Serrano (the famed artist who created “Piss Christ”); two business class tickets to Switzerland, including two 8-day first class rail passes provided by Swiss Air; a five night luxury getaway in Sayulita, Mexico; and  a luxury all-expenses-paid trip to the Kentucky Derby, sponsored by Moët & Chandon, as well as many more fashion, art, home décor and entertainment items.

Through generous sponsorships, celebrity support and phenomenal auction items, Bailey House has raised more than $15 million since its inaugural Auction. All proceeds from the event go directly to providing housing and supportive services for Bailey House clients – formerly homeless men, women and children living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses.

ABOUT BAILEY HOUSE:

In 1983, Bailey House led the response to the dual epidemics of AIDS and homelessness, helping scores of men and women survive to the treatment breakthroughs of the following decades. Today, Bailey House has 17 programs throughout NYC, as well as a food pantry and mental health clinic in upper Manhattan. Bailey House is recognized across the nation as the leader in housing, support and advocacy for individuals and families living with and impacted by HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases.

Bailey House is especially grateful for the generous support received during SuperStorm Sandy.  Bailey-Holt House, Bailey House’s landmark housing facility in Greenwich Village, endured $1.9M in damages and, after months of being closed for repairs, re-opened in February.

Profile of Bailey House clients:

• approximately 70% come from the poorest neighborhoods in New York City – East and Central Harlem in Manhattan, Hunts Point and Mott Haven in the Bronx, and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn
• 90% are people of color
• over 50% have other serious chronic conditions such as mental illness, addiction and viral hepatitis
• 34%  are women
• 2% are people of transgender experience
• 13% are under the age of 29
• 113 children reside with their mothers who are living with AIDS
